What You Need to Apply for a Marriage License

Both people who plan to marry must come to the service center at the same time. Neither person can start the process alone. Each applicant needs a valid, unexpired government-issued photo ID. A Minnesota driver's license, state-issued ID card, or a current passport all qualify. You also need to know your Social Security number. In most cases you do not need to bring the physical card, but you must provide the number.

If either person was previously married, bring proof that the prior marriage ended. A certified final divorce decree or a death certificate works. This requirement applies to both applicants. Under Minn. Stat. sec. 517.03, a prior marriage must be fully dissolved before a new license can be issued. Showing up without this documentation if it is needed will delay your application.

Both applicants must be 18 or older. A 16 or 17 year old may apply with written parental or guardian consent, as required under Minn. Stat. sec. 517.04. No one younger than 16 can get a Minnesota marriage license. There is no blood test. There is no residency requirement. You can apply in any Minnesota county regardless of where you live. The license is valid statewide for six months.

Note: You can marry in any county in Minnesota after getting your Hennepin County license. You are not limited to marrying in the county where the license was issued.

Hennepin County License Fees for Edina Residents

The standard fee is $125 in Hennepin County. Both applicants who complete at least 12 hours of premarital education from an approved program qualify for a reduced fee of $50. You must bring proof of that course on the day you apply. The lower fee is not available after the application is submitted.

There is no waiting period in Minnesota. The old 5-day wait rule was dropped in September 2016. Apply and get your license the same day. It is valid for six months. If your wedding is more than six months away, wait to apply. A license that expires before the wedding is voided. You have to pay and apply again.

Fees can change. Confirm the current amount at hennepincounty.gov before you go.
