Application Requirements

Both people must appear together at the service center. You cannot send one person alone. Each applicant needs a valid, current photo ID. A driver's license, state ID card, or passport works. The ID cannot be expired. You also need your Social Security number. Most offices do not require you to show the actual card, but you must be able to give the number.

If you or your partner was married before, you must show proof the prior marriage ended. A final divorce decree or a death certificate is the standard documentation. This applies to both applicants. Under Minn. Stat. sec. 517.03, prior marriages must be completely dissolved before a new license can be issued. The county will not move forward without this documentation if it is needed.

Both people must be at least 18. A 16 or 17 year old needs written parental or guardian consent under Minn. Stat. sec. 517.04. No one under 16 may receive a marriage license in Minnesota. There is no blood test. There is no residency requirement. You do not have to live in Eden Prairie, Hennepin County, or even in Minnesota to apply at this location.

Note: The marriage can take place in any county in Minnesota, not just Hennepin County.

Fees and No Waiting Period

Hennepin County charges $125 for a standard marriage license. If both applicants complete at least 12 hours of premarital education from a county-approved program, the fee drops to $50. You must show proof of the course when you apply. The discount is applied at that time only.

There is no waiting period in Minnesota. The state dropped the old 5-day wait in September 2016. You apply, pay, and take your license home the same day. The license is valid for six months. Do not apply too far in advance. If the six-month window expires before your wedding, the license is worthless and you have to apply and pay again.

Fees are set by Hennepin County and may change. Confirm the current amount at hennepincounty.gov before your appointment.
