What You Need to Apply

Both people who plan to marry must show up at the license center at the same time. You cannot send one person to fill out the form for both. Each applicant needs a valid, unexpired photo ID. A driver's license, state-issued ID card, or current passport all qualify. You also need to know your Social Security number. You typically do not need to show the physical card, but you must provide the number.

If either person was previously married, bring documentation that the prior marriage ended. A certified final divorce decree or a death certificate is what Anoka County accepts. Both applicants are subject to this check. Under Minn. Stat. sec. 517.03, prior marriages must be fully dissolved before a new license can be granted in Minnesota. The county will not issue a license if this documentation is missing when it is needed.

Both people must be at least 18. A 16 or 17 year old needs written consent from a parent or legal guardian, as required by Minn. Stat. sec. 517.04. No one under 16 may get a marriage license in Minnesota. There is no blood test. There is no residency requirement. You do not have to live in Coon Rapids, Anoka County, or even in Minnesota to apply here. The license is valid anywhere in Minnesota for six months.

Note: The marriage can take place in any Minnesota county, not just Anoka County.

Anoka County Marriage License Fees

The standard fee is $125 in Anoka County. Couples where both applicants complete at least 12 hours of premarital education from an approved program qualify for a reduced fee of $50. Bring proof of the class when you apply. The discount is applied at the time of application only. You cannot get a refund or discount after you have already paid full price.

There is no waiting period. Minnesota removed the old 5-day wait in September 2016. Apply and get your license the same day. The license stays valid for six months. If you do not use it in that time, it expires and you start over. Pick your wedding date before you apply so you can time things correctly.

Check the current fee at anokacountymn.gov/131/Marriage-License before your visit. Fees are set by the county and can change.
