How to Apply for an Isanti County Marriage License

Both people getting married must come to the Recorder office together. You cannot apply in stages or send one person alone. Each applicant needs a valid government-issued photo ID. Acceptable forms include a driver's license, state identification card, or a current passport. The ID must be issued by a government agency and must include your photo.

If either applicant was previously married, bring a certified copy of the document showing that marriage ended. For a divorce, you need a certified divorce decree from the court that issued it. For a death, you need a certified death certificate. These documents prove legal eligibility to marry again. A regular photocopy is not sufficient.

Isanti County follows state law on age requirements. Under Minn. Stat. § 517.04, applicants must be at least 18. Applicants who are 16 or 17 may apply with written consent from a parent or legal guardian. No blood test is required. There is no waiting period in Minnesota, so you can use your license right after you pick it up. The license remains valid for six months from its issue date.

The fee is $115 to $125. Show proof of completing a 12-hour premarital education program at the time of application and you may qualify for a reduced fee. Ask the office what documentation they accept for the discount.

Marriage License Records in Isanti County

The Minnesota Official Marriage System (MOMS) is the free online tool for searching Isanti County marriage records. The index starts at 1871. MOMS lets you search by name, county, and date. It is maintained by the Minnesota Department of Health and is open to anyone. Most people use it as their first stop for any record search, whether they are looking for a recent marriage or doing family history research.

MOMS shows index-level data. For a full certified copy, you need to contact either the Isanti County Recorder at 763-689-1191 or the Minnesota Department of Health Vital Records office. MDH charges $9 per certified copy. The MDH county registrar directory lists Isanti County's recorder as the local point of contact for marriage records.

For very old records predating the MOMS index, the Minnesota Historical Society marriage records guide can help. MNHS holds collections that include microfilmed county records and other pre-digital sources relevant to Isanti County history.

Note: MOMS covers 85 of Minnesota's 87 counties. Isanti County is one of the 85 participating counties, so records here are searchable through the statewide portal.

Certified Copies and Apostilles

Once a marriage is registered in the state vital records system, you can order certified copies from MDH or the county recorder. Most people need certified copies for name changes, insurance updates, or legal paperwork. The standard MDH copy costs $9. If you need the record for use outside the United States, the Minnesota Secretary of State provides apostilles for $5 per document. You need the certified copy first before requesting the apostille.

The officiant who performs the ceremony is responsible for returning the completed license to Isanti County within 5 days of the wedding, per Minn. Stat. § 517.13. The county then registers the marriage and forwards the record to MDH. After that, it is in the permanent state system and can be ordered from either source. If you have not received your certified copy within a few weeks of the wedding, contact the recorder's office to check on the status.
