What You Need to Bring

Both people must be present together at the license center. Each person needs a valid, current photo ID. A driver's license, state ID, or passport works. The ID must not be expired. You also need to know your Social Security number. You typically do not need to bring the card, but you must be able to provide the number.

If either person was previously married, you must show that the prior marriage ended. A certified final divorce decree or a death certificate is what the county needs to see. Both people in the application are subject to this check. Under Minn. Stat. sec. 517.03, prior marriages must be fully dissolved before a new license can be issued in Minnesota.

Both people must be 18 or older. If one applicant is 16 or 17, a parent or guardian must provide written consent under Minn. Stat. sec. 517.04. Those younger than 16 cannot get a Minnesota marriage license. There is no blood test and no residency requirement. You do not need to live in Eagan or Dakota County to apply here.

Note: You can marry anywhere in Minnesota, even if you got your license in a different county.

Dakota County Marriage License Fees

The standard fee is $125 in Dakota County. Both applicants who complete at least 12 hours of premarital education from an approved program pay a reduced fee of $50. You need to show proof of the course at the time of your application. The discount is not applied later.

There is no waiting period. Minnesota removed the old waiting requirement in September 2016. Apply one day and your license is ready to use immediately. The license stays valid for six months. If the expiration date passes before your wedding, the license is void. You would have to reapply and pay again.

Fees can change. Confirm the current fee at co.dakota.mn.us before you go in.

Dakota County is part of the Minnesota Official Marriage System. MOMS is the free public search tool for marriage records across most of Minnesota. Go to moms.mn.gov to search by last name and, if you want, first name. The results show both spouses, the county, and the date. It is open to the public with no fee and no account required. Dakota County records in MOMS cover the county's history going back into the mid-1800s.

MOMS does not provide a copy of the full marriage certificate. It only shows index data. To get an official certified copy, contact the Minnesota Department of Health Vital Records. The MDH fee is $9 per certified copy. Order by mail or in person. The process and order forms are at health.state.mn.us. The county registrar directory at health.state.mn.us/people/vitalrecords/registrars.html also lists how to contact Dakota County directly for records.

Older Eagan and Dakota County Marriage Records

For older marriage records covering Eagan and Dakota County, the Minnesota Historical Society holds materials that go back to the county's early years. The MNHS marriage records guide at libguides.mnhs.org/vital/marriage describes what is available and how to access records that may not appear in the online MOMS system. Dakota County was one of the original Minnesota counties organized in the territorial period. Some records from the mid-1800s are in MOMS, and older physical records may be at the MNHS archives.

The MDH marriage reporting page explains how Minnesota's local registration system works. If you cannot find a record in MOMS, that page can help you identify which office to contact. For very old or unusual records, the MNHS library in St. Paul is the most thorough research resource in the state.

If you need your marriage certificate recognized in another country, the Minnesota Secretary of State issues apostilles for a $5 fee. Details are at sos.mn.gov/notary-apostille. You first get a certified copy from MDH, then submit it to the Secretary of State for apostille certification.
